Counselling & Therapy

Counselling-and-therapy
Counselling can be a highly effective support for young people with behavioural issues. It offers a safe, non-judgmental space where they can explore emotions, understand triggers, and develop healthier ways to manage their thoughts and actions. Here are some key benefits:

Emotional Awareness and Regulation

  • Helps young people identify and express emotions like anger, frustration, or anxiety.

  • Teaches coping strategies to manage overwhelming feelings.

  • Reduces emotional outbursts and impulsive behaviours.

Improved Communication and Relationships

  • Encourages healthy communication and listening skills.

  • Builds empathy and respect for others’ boundaries.

  • Enhances relationships with peers, family, and teachers.

Behavioural Understanding and Change

  • Identifies the root causes of challenging behaviours (e.g. trauma, low self-esteem, unmet needs).

  • Supports development of positive behaviour patterns.

  • Helps reduce aggression, defiance, or withdrawal.

Boosts Self-Esteem and Confidence

  • Builds a sense of self-worth through positive reinforcement and goal setting.

  • Encourages young people to recognise their strengths and achievements.

Builds Resilience and Problem-Solving Skills

  • Equips young people with tools to manage setbacks and stress.

  • Encourages taking responsibility for actions in a constructive way.

  • Promotes long-term emotional and mental wellbeing.

Supports School and Social Life

  • Improves focus, attendance, and engagement in education.

  • Enhances social skills and reduces conflict in group settings.

At Identity Care we recognise that every young person is unique — with their own history, personality, strengths, and emotional needs. That’s why each child receives an individual counselling or therapy plan, tailored specifically to support their development, healing, and wellbeing.

What This Means in Practice

  • A personalised assessment is carried out to understand the young person’s emotional and mental health needs.

  • A bespoke therapeutic plan is created in collaboration with the young person (where appropriate), therapists, key workers, and other professionals.

  • Therapy may include counselling, trauma-focused work, play or creative therapy, life-story work, or attachment-based approaches, depending on what suits the child best.

  • The plan is reviewed regularly to track progress and adjust as the child grows, and their needs evolve.
